With the increasing popularity of minimalism, bright colors and complex patterns are no longer the be-all and end-all in nail design. Simple nails take over the scene. Now it’s more about creating a unique and eye-catching design with as few and as simple elements as possible. If this idea sounds uninteresting and restricted to you, then you are wrong. Once you dive into the world of minimalism, you will be amazed at what can be achieved with just a few simple lines, dots, shapes and colors.
For example, many professional manicurists are now using really cool minimalist techniques such as negative space, strategically placed single trimmings, and subtle hues to create beautifully simple nails. So, if you don’t have a lot of time or inclination to get your nails done or have them done in a nail salon, then minimalism is the place for you. All of the designs we introduce you to in the next few lines are simple enough to try at home without sacrificing style. Just keep scrolling!

Minimalist French nails
The French manicure goes perfectly with the idea for simple nails. It is subtle, elegant, easy to imitate and yet eye-catching. You can achieve the look of a French manicure yourself by first painting your nails beige, then covering the nail tips with adhesive tape. You can either paint this visible area white as usual or use a completely different color. Black, silver, red, green, blue, etc. are good alternatives. Then peel off the tape, apply the top coat and marvel at your finished manicure.

Inverted French nails
The latest trend is playing with the idea of an inverted French manicure. As you have probably already recognized from the name, only the area directly above the cuticle is painted here, instead of the tips. You can achieve the look just like you would with a traditional French manicure – with a neutral base color, some tape and a catchy accent color. It’s elegant and at the same time playful and experimental. To add even more visual interest to your manicure, you can combine the two French nail methods. Complete the look with a small dot in the middle.

Polka dot manicure
To be true to the minimalist style, do this classic manicure in neutral colors like black or silver, keeping the points to a minimum. A few tiny dots in a ladybug pattern, in a line through the middle, as a frame or just on a single accent nail are sufficient.

Simple nails with abstract motifs
In moments of wild creativity, when you want to express yourself freely without being restricted by symmetry and rules, artists mostly turn to abstract designs. This also applies to nail art. To create a minimalist feeling despite the freedom, choose only up to three polishes and a few other elements. You can then experiment with it as much as you want. You can stain, draw, or puncture any nail or just a single accent nail. The best part about this technique is that each mistake will only add character to the manicure.

Simple nails with geometric details never go out of style and are easy to paint at home too. For example, you can create tiny dots with a toothpick and use tape to make exact shapes and lines. Either your geometric pattern will then be the same for all nails or you can come up with several different designs. You then combine and distribute them strategically.
Geometric shapes can be as simple or complex as you like
The ombre technique goes with just about any nail art style and the minimalism is no exception. To keep them refined and elegant, choose just two colors from the same spectrum. If you’ve never done ombre nails before, then you should check out our simple tutorial here first. Then come back and draw inspiration from the rest of the ideas in our gallery.
What colors do you choose for your ombre nails?
Minimalist and simple nails can be just as beautiful and eye-catching as colorful manicures with wild shapes and complex designs. One of the biggest challenges is to limit yourself to a handful of colors and patterns. On the other hand, neutrals like black, silver and white will become your best friends and can be used without restriction.
Many women have tiny dots tattooed on their fingers, which is also an expression of minimalism
