The Euro pallet bed is an inexpensive piece of furniture that you can easily build yourself at home – the perfect task for you if you enjoy mastering and building in your free time! These beds are also really trendy today as they fit in very well with the industrial decor that is currently very much in vogue. A self-designed bed made from Euro pallets is also a great alternative to the classic bed from the furniture store and costs two or even three times less. Not only will it bring a fresh touch to your bedroom, but it will also give you the opportunity to do something good for the environment by reusing the old pallets (this is called “upcycling”). Are you already convinced of the advantages of this type of bed? Then read our instructions and put them into practice!
Design your own Euro pallet bed – practical tips and necessary materials
The construction of a Euro pallet bed also has other positive sides – you can easily design the bed how you like it and of course how it best fits your bedroom. All you need is skill, creativity and a desire for craftsmanship – no other special skills are required at all! Before you start building, however, you should get the right pallets. Euro pallets actually differ from one-way pallets – they are much more stable and cost at least 10 euros each, while one-way pallets are often even given free of charge in supermarkets or hardware stores. Even if you found the Euro pallets in the bulky waste, for example, they should by no means be moldy, wet or damaged in any way. The number of pallets you need depends on the size and height of the bed you want to build. For a simple single bed you don’t need more than two or three pallets, while for a higher double bed you should get at least eight pallets. For the instructions that we offer you in this article, you will need the following materials: 5 to 8 Euro pallets in good condition, enough nails and screws, wood varnish, a brush or paint roller, sandpaper, an old sponge, grinding machine, hammer or cordless screwdriver and possibly a saw.
Step 1: Prepare, color and paint the Euro pallets
First, you should prepare the pallets well – the wood must be sanded with the grinder until it is ideally smooth. In this way you remove any protruding nails, splinters or screws and avoid the risk of injury that arises. Then sand the surface of the pallet again with sandpaper and clean the wood with an old sponge. Finally, you can paint the Euro pallets or even paint them in the color of your choice.
Step 2: Arrange the pallets and fix them securely
After the varnish or paint has already dried out, you should arrange the pallets correctly: first place three pallets next to each other on their long side and then two other pallets at right angles to them – again with their long side. In order to increase the height of the bed, you can also place additional Euro pallets on this construction. If you are satisfied with the shape of the bed, you should fix all pallets firmly with nails or screws – this is how you form the frame of the bed.
Step 3: Give the construction more stability
In order to give the whole construction more stability, you can attach several boards on the lying surface and on the sides. Then you have to check whether the varnish or paint still looks good and repaint or varnish, if necessary. Then place the mattress on the pallet frame. Your self-made bed is already ready!
Step 4: build a headboard
Finally, we will explain how you can make a beautiful headboard for your Euro pallet bed. It is made from two pallets, which are placed the longer side at the top of the bed and then fixed with nails or screws. It would be very original if you use the gaps in the pallets as small shelves or create interesting optical effects with a chain of lights incorporated into the bed frame.
